The Best Magnesium for Supplements
Welcome to this week's episode of the NatureCity...
The form of magnesium in your supplement is an important consideration. Some supplements contain magnesium oxide that isn’t very efficient at delivering magnesium to the bloodstream, or magnesium citrate that is more likely to cause gastrointestinal distress because it increases osmotic pressure in the intestines.
That’s why for TrueMagnesium we chose magnesium bisglycinate chelate. It offers the best of all worlds – a highly absorbable form of magnesium, no competition for absorption with minerals like calcium, and no digestive or gastrointestinal distress.
Magnesium bisglycinate chelate was developed to closely mimic how we get magnesium from plants, which is through an organic chelate. Magnesium is bound to the amino acid glycine to create the magnesium bisglycinate chelate.
Combining magnesium and glycine is ideal to maximize magnesium absorption. Glycine is the smallest of the amino acids and can pass through cell membranes, which enhances magnesium absorption and its accessibility in the body.
Plus the chelate bond that joins the magnesium and glycine is just the right strength. It’s strong enough to stay intact to be absorbed through mucosal cells of the intestines, but then the compound can be separated (hydrolyzed) into magnesium and glycine.
Magnesium has a key role in the body and is involved in over 300 physiological processes. Glycine is very valuable in its own right – for example, it’s needed to form collagen and the most important antioxidant in the body, glutathione.
If there is one drawback of magnesium bisglycinate chelate it’s only 10% elemental magnesium. So to get 400mg of magnesium (the RDA or Recommended Daily Allowance, you need to take 4 grams of the raw material). This would require a lot of large sized capsules to take daily.
To make it more convenient for you, TrueMagnesium is an easy-to-drink powder mix.
Each TrueMagnesium serving (or scoop) gives you 200mg of magnesium. If you want to reach the 400mg RDA, you can take 2 servings a day – and each TrueMagnesium canister contains 60 servings, so 2 servings per day will last you 30 days.
If you take 2 servings a day, it’s best to take them at different times of day to get the best absorption. The TrueMagnesium drink powder is sugar-free and berry flavored. Add a scoop to 8 ounces of water or an amount to personal taste.

View All ReviewsThe TRAACS® magnesium bisglycinate chelate bonds magnesium to the amino acid glycine and offers superior digestion and bioavailability.
The TRAACS magnesium bisglycinate chelate was developed to closely mimic how we get magnesium from plants, which is through an organic chelate. The magnesium is bound to the amino acid glycine to create the chelate.
In addition to being an organic chelate, this form of magnesium is also soluble. This makes it very easy for your body to absorb and use with very little likelihood of any gastrointestinal distress.

Some of the benefits you may experience with TrueMagnesium:
Each serving contains 200mg of magnesium, which is 10% of the entire 2,000mg salt chelate – much of the rest of the chelate is the glycine amino acid.
We do not use the buffered version – there is no magnesium oxide in TrueMagnesium.
The TRAACS® magnesium bisglycinate chelate in TrueMagnesium does not have strong laxative properties and is unlikely to cause gastrointestinal distress – it is very well tolerated.
One reason for this is the TRAACS® magnesium bisglycinate chelate will not ionize in the intestines. This is important because forms of magnesium that ionize can cause loose stool and diarrhea.
As an example, take magnesium citrate, which is a salt that bonds magnesium to citric acid. Magnesium citrate can have a strong laxative effect because it increases acidic ions in the intestines, which increases osmotic pressure.
To dilute these ions and ease the pressure, your body releases water that results in loose stools or diarrhea. This is a reason why magnesium citrate is prescribed when preparing for a colonoscopy.
As an everyday magnesium supplement, we believe magnesium bisglycinate is superior – it offers a highly absorbable form of magnesium that does not compete for absorption with minerals like calcium and is unlikely to cause digestive or gastrointestinal distress. It supports regularity and healthy bowel movements.
