Surfactant is short for surface active agent. These are cleaning compounds that stir up activity on the surface, like the hair and scalp with shampoo, to help trap and remove dirt. Many shampoos contain surfactants characterized as sulphates that may have great foaming characteristics and cleaning properties, but often strip away too much moisture and oil from hair leaving it too dry and less healthy looking. Sulphates can also cause the scalp to become too dry and more prone to irritation.
TrueShine is sulphate-free, and three of the surfactants used to clean your hair and scalp are derived from coconut oil fatty acids. These include sodium cocoyl isethionate, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium methyl cocoyl taurate. These are gentle surfactants that clean without causing excessive dryness. They can help retain hair moisture and may be particularly helpful to those with dry or damaged hair. This surfactant combination encourages dirt to attach itself to them, which makes it easier for dirt and grime to be washed away. This leaves the hair feeling clean, soft, and hydrated.
TrueShine contains an additional surfactant not derived from coconut called Disodium laureth sulfosuccinate. It too is not a sulphate, but a mild and non-irritating cleansing agent with great foaming properties. It is often used in gentle cleansers for babies and those with sensitive skin.
